BRIEF

Three interactive tables, each table shows a different explorer’s desk. The visitor can discover interesting facts linked to the objects on the table.

In this exhibit the client wanted to show how the world changed as new lands and continents were discovered and settled by Europeans, and new trade routes developed, eventually bringing in the Renaissance.

APPROACH

For our initial design meeting with the client I fleshed out a wireframe, moodboard as well as flowpath for the game. After discussion with the script writer we determined the major stories that needed to be told for each traveller. I then curated relevant objects of the time that could help tell these stories. A first visual for one of the travellers was mocked up to showcase the look and feel of the overall interactive and rough layouts were created for the other two.

Once we got approval from the client to continue I sourced the remaining missing objects for the other tables and provided a more detailed design including Arabic versions for the all the different instances of the game.

Once the client was happy with the approach and choice of objects, I was able to start creating the first prototypes by liaising with our dev team. This allowed me to start user testing before presenting a more developed Alpha to the client.

The tables were created as linear looping videos in After effects which allowed me to have control over the assets. The developer then overlaid hotspots that would trigger sections in the video timeline. Touching the correct object brought up an information panel. the user could also touch anywhere else on the table and receive a response (a wrong object would shake, touch the candle flame would make it hiss and smoke etc).

RESULTS

The installation is still present at the museum. Users are able to discover these travellers at their own pace and enjoy being able to step in time and put themselves in the seats of these great explorers.
